Police allege man punched 84-year-old in back of head

The accused attacker will be brought before Toowoomba Magistrates Court for the second time in two days as he faces the charge of serious assault on a person over 60 years in what police say was a random and unprovoked king hit.

Video has emerged of Grand Central security staff detaining Jason William Mortimer, 25, just a few minutes after he allegedly king hit an 84-year-old man at Grand Central Shopping Centre.

The video shows Mortimer pinned against a wall while he argues and abuses two security guards.

As he is moved away as awoman moves into the path of the security guards.

The alleged attack occurred about 11.15 on Sunday and resulted in the senior citizen suffering minor head lacerations that were treated at the Toowoomba Hospital.

Police will allege the 84-year-old man was walking through the centre with his wife when he was approached from behind by a 25-year-old man.

Police allege Jason William Mortimer punched the 84-year-old in the back of the head knocking him to the ground.

It is understood the two men were not known to each other, and police are treating the assault as a random attack.

A third man witnessed the attack and came to the senior’s aid. Police will allege Mortimer headbutted the 27-year-old man in the face and split his lip.

Police and security were called to the scene and arrested Mortimer.

He was held in custody overnight and charged with serious assault of a person over 60, assault occasioning bodily harm and public nuisance

His matters were mentioned briefly in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday. There was no bail application and Mortimer was remanded in custody until Tuesday.
