Failing to keep a court date has left a 45-year-old man spending much of the Easter weekend in the city’s watch house.
Steven Charles Wheeler was scheduled to appear in court on January 19, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard on Monday.
However, he had failed to appear in court on that date but was found by police on Saturday and taken into custody on the outstanding warrant.
Police prosecutor Julia Wheaton told the court Wheeler had been caught driving without a licence and with methylamphetamine in his system on Mort St, North Toowoomba, about 3pm, May 23, last year.
He had been granted bail on December 15 to appear in court on January 19 but had failed to appear, Senior Constable Wheaton said.
It was the 45-year-old’s third drug driving offence in five years, she said.
Wheeler appeared in custody to plead guilty to the driving and fail to appear in court offences.
Duty solicitor Jag MacDonald, of MacDonald Law, told the court his client was an unemployed butcher and father of two.
His client was subject to a suspended jail sentence but that was for unrelated matters, he said.
Acting Magistrate Leanne Scoines fined Wheeler a total $950 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for a total seven months.
The period of the suspended sentence was extended by one month.
