Less than two weeks after being released on parole a 21-year-old Toowoomba man was caught as a passenger in multiple stolen cars, claiming he had no other way of getting around.

Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

Just 11 days after he was released on parole, a Toowoomba man was identified riding in stolen cars because he had no other way of getting around.

Kamahl Jeremy Scott Duncan was released from custody on parole on July 5, 2022 after he was re-sentenced in Toowoomba District Court in February for breaching the conditions of two suspended jail sentences imposed when he and an older woman committed the armed robbery of a toy shop from which they stole a $1200 Lego set when he was 18.

On July 16 however the 21-year-old was spotted in the passenger seat of a stolen vehicle that was found abandoned a day later, Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told on October 4, 2022.

The court was told on July 30 a Mazda sedan was stolen and a day later Duncan was captured by the CCTV cameras of a 7-Eleven service station getting out of the passenger seat.

The following day police found the vehicle abandoned.

Kamahl Jeremy Scott Duncan, 21, faced Toowoomba Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

A few days later a Mazda Tribute was stolen from a Toowoomba address on August 3, with Duncan again captured on CCTV cameras getting out of the passenger’s seat.

The court was told Duncan’s fingerprints were found in all three of the vehicles.

In court on Tuesday Duncan pleaded guilty to three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Duncan’s solicitor Claire Graham said while her client was still a young man he had “amassed quite a significant criminal history”.

The court was told Duncan had a “difficult” upbringing, with his mother spending a large portion of his childhood in custody that saw him raised in the foster care system and by extended family.

Ms Graham said after his most recent release from custody in July Duncan “very quickly” found himself in the company of a young co-offender, and that he had been a passenger in the stolen vehicles as he had no other transport options.

Magistrate Clare Kelly sentenced Duncan to four months jail, wholly suspended for 12 months, but remanded him in custody to appear in Toowoomba District Court to be re-sentenced on breaching the previously imposed suspended sentences.
