Kaden Rodney Parmenter faces Toowoomba Magistrates Court for wilful damage, possession of a knife

A knife-carrying teenager has fronted court in Toowoomba for going on a rampage with a chair at a nightclub and causing $1000 of damage.

How do juries decide a verdict?

A teenager who smashed a television outside a Toowoomba nightclub blamed boredom and being in the wrong crowd for his actions.

About 8.40pm on July 3, police spoke to a group of people in relation to a graffiti offence, Toowoomba Magistrates Court was told on Tuesday.

A member of the group, Kaden Rodney Parmenter, was found to be in possession of a 14cm knife in his bum bag, which he claimed to carry for self-protection.

Further police inquiries revealed that earlier in the night, about 8pm, the 19-year-old was with friends and had attempted to enter Society nightclub, but found the venue to be closed.

In response, police prosecutor Senior Constable Leea Trewin said Parmenter grabbed a chair and threw it into a television, destroying it.

On July 14, the court was told police had been patrolling along Drayton Road when they stopped a group of males, including Parmenter, and when asked he if had anything on him he told the officers he had a knife.

On Tuesday, the teenager pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a knife in public, wilful damage and contravening a direction of police.

Parmenter’s solicitor Ryan McCullough told the court his client had been an apprentice sign-writer before working as a truck driver after leaving school, but was currently unemployed.

The court was told on the nights in question Parmenter had been with friends who were “poor influences”.

Magistrate Lousie Shephard said the “senseless damage” was a result of “boredom and bravado”, and that in concerned her when young people carried knives.

Parmenter was fined $850, and ordered to pay $995 restitution for the destroyed TV. No convictions were recorded.
