Australia's growing drug crisis

A Toowoomba man has faced court after he was found in possession of dangerous drugs or utensils three times in one month.

Jack Whiting appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday where he pleaded guilty to three charges of possessing a dangerous drug, three charges of possessing drug utensils and failing to take reasonable precautions with a syringe.

The court was told that on three occasions in April this year police stopped the 28-year-old, with police finding him in possession of diazepam and another dangerous drug, as well as scales, on April 16.

Police again stopped Whiting on April 30 where he was found in possession of methylamphetamine and an uncapped syringe.

Jack Whiting, 28, appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court for multiple drug possession and drug utensil offences.

Whiting’s solicitor Julia Molloy told the court her client had finished high school and studied business administration as well as office based counselling.

More recently Ms Molloy said Whiting had worked at a trampoline park, but at the start of the Covid pandemic the owner laid off a large number of workers including her client.

The court was told Whiting was interested in pursuing work in drug counselling.

Noting his long history with drugs, Ms Molloy said Whiting first smoked cannabis at 13-14 but did not experiment with harder drugs until he was 25 when he started consuming methylamphetamine.

Ms Molloy said the prescription medicine was his father’s, who died in end of May unexpectedly,

“He has managed to resist the pull of drugs while grieving, which is to his credit,” Ms Molloy said.

Ms Molloy said her client had struggled with drug use, but there had been no further offending since his last arrest in April.

Magistrate Louise Shephard sentenced Whiting to 12 months probation, with a conviction recorded.
