A 59-year-old man taken into custody after a five-hour standoff with police at a Ruthven St home on Wednesday will remain in custody.

Geoffrey Kunne was not in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday when his matters were mentioned and police prosecutor Natalie Bugden said the 59-year-old remained in Toowoomba Hospital.

“I have been advised that he underwent surgery today and is expected to be in hospital for five days,” Sergeant Bugden told the court.

Duty lawyer Matt Gemmell, of Bouchier Khan Lawyers, said he was representing Kunne as duty lawyer and asked that the matters be adjourned to Monday.

Kunne was the subject of a standoff with police at the home during which police claim he sprayed a police officer in the face with bleach.

After hours of negotiations, Public Safety Response Team officers stormed the premises and took Kunne into their custody.

He was taken to Toowoomba Hospital where he remained under police guard on Thursday.

Kunne has been charged with 10 matters including five counts of acts intended to resist or prevent lawful arrest and one count each of arson, serious assault of a police officer, obstructing police, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing drug utensils.

There being no application for bail, Acting Magistrate Roger Stark remanded Kunne in custody and adjourned all matters for mention back in the same court on Monday.
