A Gatton man accused of beating his heavily pregnant partner lied about his whereabouts when granted bail.
Only two days after receiving bail, Jayson Joe pleaded guilty before Toowoomba Magistrates Court to breaching it when police discovered he had lied about his address.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Chris Willson told the court police visited Joe’s elected bail address on October 23 to ensure he was complying with conditions but Joe was nowhere to be found.
“They were advised by the people living there that they didn’t know the defendant,” Constable Willson said.
The following morning, police located Joe walking around the Gatton area where he confessed to have misguided police regarding his address.
“He said he was living in a tent in a park,” Constable Willson said.
“He said that he gave his old address as his bail address and hadn’t lived there since September.”
Duty solicitor Chelsea Saldumbide said Joe had made efforts to secure a new address in the area.
“Essentially, the landlord wasn’t happy there were so many caravans on the premises so he had to vacate the property,” she explained.
“He is now in contact with a support service who’s trying to organise him at least a room in the Gatton area.”
Magistrate Michelle Dooley, who presided over Joe’s initial bail proceedings, said it was clear he knew the conditions of bail from the beginning.
“There was quite a bit of discussion so he was aware,” she said.
“You need to find yourself an address and you need to provide that to the police.”
Joe was fined $200 for the breach with no conviction recorded.
He remains on bail for charges of assault occasioning bodily harm (domestic violence).
