Smoke Alarms advice for owner occupiers

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have issued an evacuation order for residents living in Myall Park and Hookswood, north of Miles.

There is a fast moving grass fire that is threatening homes and QFES warns residents that they should not expect a firefighter at their door as conditions worsen.

This fire destroyed an estimated 7400ha overnight and is burning out of control.

QFES warns residents to leave now as they are in immediate danger and it may soon be too dangerous to leave.

The warning area includes properties between the Leichhardt Highway, Murilla Rd intersecting with Archnalls Rd, Welshs Rd, Gearys Rd, Greens Rd and Ryalls Rd.

A fast-moving fire is travelling from Warramoo Rd and is expected to impact Ryalls Rd within the coming hours.

The QFES has warned:

• Leave immediately, follow your bushfire survival plan, wear protective clothing and stay hydrated.

• Take vital medications with you.

• Avoid driving on Myall Park Road, Hookswood Pelham Road, Retreat Road, Kerwicks Road and Old Forrestry Road.

• Check for road closures on 13 90 40 and let others know of your intended travel route.

The warning comes after about 40 residents took shelter at the Tara Community Center after a large grass fire threatened to destroy their homes over Sunday night and into Monday.

The blaze at Montrose, near Tara, has destroyed about 840ha of bush and farm land and required a massive effort from firefighters to control.

As of 1pm on Monday the fire had been downgraded and was burning within the containment line.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said crews were still conducting a damage assessment on Monday after noon but it was estimated that at least 12 homes and outbuildings had been destroyed.

The fires come about two weeks after police launched an investigation into suspected arson at Wieambilla and authorities are working to determine if the latest round of fires were also deliberately lit.
