Emergency wrap: Toowoomba crash leaves boy in hospital, bystanders assist family

In an extraordinary showing of community spirit, Toowoomba residents banded together to support a family after their car crashed into a tree on Christmas Day. Now police are appealing for information, with a boy suffering serious injuries.

QLD's 2022 road toll described as "concerning"

A Christmas Day crash that left a young boy in hospital with serious injuries appears to have brought out the best in Toowoomba, with as many as 20 bystanders gathering to lend support.

The incident on West St not far from the corner of Bridge St in Toowoomba occurred about 5pm on Sunday when a hatchback came off the road and hit a tree.

The young boy was rushed to Toowoomba Hospital in a serious condition with a head injury before being flown to Brisbane.

A nearby resident, who declined to be named, said she heard the crash and rushed to help the family of four in the car.

She said within minutes there were more than a dozen people there either ringing triple-0, using their vehicles to block off the area to oncoming traffic or tending to the young boy.

“I supported (the boy’s) head and with other people walked him over to the side of the road and held his head,” the woman said.

“There were several people helping the boy, including one man who was checking his pulse and another that was assessing his breathing.

“I’d say within five minutes there were five people on the phones ringing.

“As soon as I got involved it was a blur, but when I next looked up five cars had blocked the traffic so no one could get near the road.

“Nobody sat there and thought about filming. People just wanted to use their hands.”

The woman said the community’s response to the incident was a great example of Australian values.

“I personally think it’s in the Australian identity. it’s an Australian trait, it’s how we’re raised - to help someone,” she said.

“It’s our identity and culture, it’s instilling that value as kids that anyone should be expected to provide support and run at the sight of any sort of need.”

Police are calling for dashcam footage of the incident, which involved a 2007 Honda Jazz hatchback.

Anyone with information can ring PoliceLink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
