A 50-year-old man got more than he bargained for during a drive home from doing the shopping when police arrived on his doorstep.

Brendon Mason George was seen swerving his car on the New England Highway near Highfields about 2pm, September 29, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

Police responding to calls about a suspected drunk driver, arrived at George’s home shortly after having connected him to the vehicle via the registration number given by witnesses.

When police arrived at his home, George was unpacking his shopping from the car into the house and police noted there was an opened can of beer in the console, the court heard.

George told police he had just driven home from the Highfields Plaza minutes earlier.

Given a roadside breath test, the 50-year-old blew a breath/alcohol reading of 0.175, the court heard.

The self represented George pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor.

He told the court he had been without his driver’s licence since the incident almost two months ago and as a result of having no licence couldn’t work as a cleaner.

Magistrate Clare Kelly fined George $750 and disqualified him from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for a further six months.
