Police call drink drivers "selfish pricks"

A drunk driving woman who crashed her car into a street sign and later denied to police she had been driving ultimately blew a breath/alcohol reading four times the legal limit.

A witness who saw Amanda Lee Scurr drive into a sign post on Colamba St, Chinchilla, about 4.15pm, May 16, called police.

The 34-year-old had driven on but the witness, who knew the driver, told police who went to her home, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

Police found Scurr unsteady on her feet but she insisted she had not been driving though her car’s engine was warm and she said she was the only one who drove it.

Asked about damage to the car, Scurr told police the damage was done two years ago.

After refusing a number of times to provide a sample of breath for testing, police warned her of the consequences and she complied and blew a breath/alcohol reading of 0.2, the court heard.

She pleaded guilty to driving while under the influence of liquor.

Her solicitor Jag MacDonald, of MacDonald Law, told the court his client had been sober for 106 days since the incident.

Scurr worked a two-week on, two-week off shift and when she wasn’t working she lived in Chinchilla, he said.

Magistrate Damian Carroll commended Scurr on being sober for 106 days and urged her to “keep going”.

Mr Carroll placed her on 12 months probation and disqualified her from holding or obtaining a driver’s licence for 12 months.
