The Chronicle put out a call to readers to vote for the region’s best-dressed Book Week costume, and now the votes are in.

Winning by a landslide was the Titanic captain Edward Smith, who also goes by the name Archie Glasby.

The eight-year-old ship expert said it was amazing to be crowned the best dressed, even though he knew he had it in the bag.

“Yeah I knew (I would win),” he proudly said.

“Well because of how good my costume is.”

The Western Downs ship fanatic said he wanted to dress up as the captain after he, “became obsessed with the Titanic, very, for about a year or two”.

“I really like how it sank, how it split in half and stuff.”

Next year Archie plans to dress up as one of the Titanic’s sister ships – thee HMHS Britannic – which Archie said also sunk after hitting an underground mine.

Archie said he’d never been on a ship but he was excited to do so.

“No, I’m not scared (about it sinking) because we have radar now,” he said.

Archie’s mother, Jo-Ann Glasby, thanked everyone for their votes and her sister Sarah for making the winning costume.

“I’m super proud of Archie,” she said.

“He absolutely blows me away with all the knowledge he has about Titanic history and how he keeps building ships.”

When asked what fact everyone should know about the Titanic Archie said, “everyone should probably know it sank”.

“It’s hard to believe an “unsinkable” ship sank,” he said.
