Suspected shark attack on a remote beach in Australia’s north

Authorities are investigating after a person was bitten by a shark at a remote beach.

A man has been rushed to hospital after he was reportedly bitten by a shark at a remote beach in Western Australia’s northwest.

Emergency services rushed to Fourteen Mile Beach Camp, near Coral Bay, 1110 kilometres north of Perth about 11.18am on Monday.

Parks and Wildlife officers found a whale carcass floating offshore at Point Cloates near Coral Bay hours earlier, prompting authorities to issue a shark advice for the area.

“It is possible the carcass will act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close into shore along this stretch of coast,” a Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) spokesperson said

“DPIRD is working with local authorities and further information will be provided as it becomes available.”

Beaches in the area have been closed, and swimmers have been advised to be cautious.

The species of shark is unknown, but it is believed a shark had been swimming close to the shoreline.

Authorities are monitoring the situation.
