Optus customers in Brisbane rocked by sudden outage to NBN services

Optus customers in one major city have been impacted by a sudden outage to NBN services, in the latest blow to the embattled telco.

Optus customers across Brisbane have been rocked by an unexpected network outage, with the embattled telco confirming NBN services for some customers have been impacted.

In a statement on its website, Optus said they were aware of an issue impacting some NBN services across the River City region and in certain parts of Queensland.

“Optus fixed line services, both internet and phone are experiencing issues in this area,” the statement read.

“We sincerely apologise for the disruption and thank customers for their patience while our teams work as quickly as possible to restore services.”

The telco’s mobile network is still working as expected in the area.

In an update on Wednesday afternoon, an Optus spokeswoman said up to 95,000 customers in Brisbane and other parts of the state were progressively regaining their NBN connections from restoration activities.

“The outage was the result of a network server failure at our Rochedale, Brisbane Exchange,” the spokeswoman said.

“Our technicians remain on site and are working as quickly as possible to fully restore connectivity for all Optus NBN customers.

“We sincerely apologise for the disruption and thank customers for their patience.”

Calls to triple-0 and emergency services via the mobile network were not impacted.

Customers are being urged to power cycle their modem by turning it off and on and unplugging the modem from the wall.

It comes just a week after thousands of Melbourne services were impacted in the city’s southeast due to a suspected vandalism incident.

About 14,546 services in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula area were affected, attributed to what the telco called an “underground fibre break” — earlier described as an “aerial fibre break”.

“Calls to emergency services are impacted by this outage,” the message on the website at the time stated.

“Optus customers will only be able to call emergency services if they are within coverage of another mobile network or are able to call via wi-fi.”

Services were restored later in the day, with Optus saying the incident occurring at a Telstra put on the Mornington Peninsula where a fibre cable was cut.

“This matter has been reported to Victoria Police, and Optus is co-operating with authorities in their investigation,” a spokeswoman said at the time.
