Apple 5K Retina iMac will change how you look at a computer

EVERY now and then, a product comes along that makes you think ‘I can never go back to what I had before’. Whether it be the first time you went to someone’s house who had broadband, ruining your dial-up connection. Or what about when you first tried an iPhone? Your Nokia was never going to be good enough.

Apple’s new 5K Retina iMac will change how you look at a computer, and you will never be able to go back.

Annually, Apple has two or three events where it wants to blow our minds with whatever product it is launching out of the secret labs in Cupertino. So far this year we have seen new versions of its mobile software, iOS and its computer software, OS X. We have seen new iPhones, big new iPhones and earlier this month we saw new iPads and iMac.

Named the iPad Air 2 and the iPad Mini 3, Apple’s two new tablets were the main attractions of the company’s October keynote, however, the focus should have been on the new iMac.

The inside of the 5K Retina iMac is essentially the same as what you will find inside your ordinary one, but as the name suggests, it’s the screen that sets it apart.

Apple claims the display is the world’s highest resolution panel and it truly is outstanding. When sitting next to my ordinary full HD display, it’s like comparing the screens from the original iPhone to the new iPhone 6 Plus. It has seven times as many pixels as your full HD TV in a body that at its edges is just 5mm thin.

To look this good, Apple uses a calculation it calls “points” to work out how things look on your display. The points themselves represent the physical distance, so by default everything on your Retina iMac looks the same size as any other display. What sets this apart though, is that for every one point, the Retina display packs four times the pixels. This means four times the detail, and pretty much a four times better looking display.

Starting at $2999, it’s by no means cheap.

Aside from the display, everything else about the Retina 5K iMac is just as you would expect from an iMac. It runs the latest version of OS X, Yosemite that adds a bunch of cool new features that allow you to use iPhone features on your computer. It comes with moderately fast internal specs, and comes in a super slim all-in-one package.

Starting at $2999, it’s by no means cheap, but if it is in your price range, there is nothing better.

In fact, I am genuinely ruined with my personal computer now, how am I meant to go back to a world that just isn’t as beautiful as the one I experience through the Retina 5K iMac?
