REVIEW

Samsung has kicked off the year with an exciting unveiling of three new flagship smartphones – the Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra – at their Unpacked event in San Francisco.

I was treated with an early hands on with the new devices as they made their global debut. All three devices have launched in four colour variants – Cream, Green, Lavender and Phantom Black, with a wide range of exciting accessories and there are even a few additional exclusive colourways available through Samsung’s website.

Each of the Samsung Galaxy S Series phones are very familiar to last year’s releases but with design enhancements internally and externally, including the increased usage of recycled materials used to produce the devices (glass, aluminium and plastics).

Additionally, all of the phones boast an improved Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor, which offers incredible all-round performance especially when gaming.

Samsung has upgraded the cameras with enhanced ‘nightography’ (low light) capabilities, improved the device’s battery life and there’s a continuation of their IP68 water and dust resistance.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the top tier model of the bunch, which sports all of the best of the latest features. This includes the biggest display on offer – a bold 6.8” QHD+ curved edge display, and it’s the only device to come with Samsung’s ‘S Pen’ Stylus that can even be slotted inside of the chassis of the phone when not in use. This is awesome note taking and it also has quirky uses which include working as a remote to take photos from a far. Alternatively, the Galaxy S23+ has a 6.6” FHD+ display and the baseline Galaxy S23 has a comfortable 6.1” FHD+ display.

Cameras

All of the cameras across all three phones have been upgraded. Selfies look better with enhanced details and better background blur and bokeh.

Video stabilisation has been improved and each of the phones have insane low light photography and videography capabilities, which also allows astrophotography that would usually require high tech camera equipment to capture.

The S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra boast multiple camera lenses. There’s a 50MP main camera on the S23 and S23+, while comparatively the S23 Ultra sports a new mind boggling 200MP back camera. I can’t wait to test these out in the real world.

@ellyawesometech I just attended Samsung Unpacked 2023 where they announced the new Samsung Galaxy S23 and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra! But I mostly just ate a lot of food!!! 🫢😂😂 #samsung#samsunggalaxy#tech#girly#samsungs23#samsungs23ultra#samsunggalaxys23♬ original sound - Elly Awesome

Battery

The battery has already been long lasting on the previous models of these phones, however, this year both the S23 and S23+ have had battery increases by 200mAh. And the Galaxy S23 Ultra has kept its excellent all day (and more) battery life with its 5000mAh battery.

Should you upgrade?

I’m yet to test these devices out in the real world, however, it’s clear they are high performance phones that will likely exceed your needs in most departments, especially if you love Android phones. And the S23 Ultra is definitely a phone to consider if you’ve enjoyed using a stylus in the past.

The Ultra’s screen is the perfect size to help enhance your productivity and the S Pen offers you an awesome note taking experience, the ability to mark up documents or even create digital art on the go.

All of the new S Series devices will be available for pre-order starting February 2 and available in store on the February 17. Prices for the Galaxy S23 start at $1349, Galaxy S23+ starts at $1649 and Galaxy S23 Ultra starts at $1949.
