Sydney set for a sunny day after May rain stretch

After a long stretch of gloomy weather, Sydneysiders can finally ditch the umbrellas and put on the sunnies.

Sunny days are here again for rain-battered Sydneysiders, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting the city’s May rain marathon will end on Tuesday.

The bureau forecasts a bright, sunny day with just a 20 per cent chance of rain, with a low of 12C and a high of 22C.

The sun’s face will likely stay up through the week as well, with only partly cloudy days forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, before possible showers return on the weekend.

The sunshine follows days of sustained rain that battered the city and broader NSW coastal regions.

“The end is in sight to the relentless soaking on parts of the NSW coast, with a period of much drier weather ahead,” Weatherzone said on Monday.

“This will come as exceptionally good news for anyone whose washing has been accumulating in great piles in homes across Sydney, as well as coastal areas within a few hours of the city and especially the South Coast.”

To 9am on Monday, Sydney recorded 13 straight days with 3mm of rainfall or more, Weatherzone said, for a running total of 212.8 mm for May.

“That’s not a record rainy streak, but it’s close,” the forecaster said.

“The Sydney average for the whole of May is 117.3 mm in records going back to 1859.

“Sydney has also experienced exceptionally low average sunshine hours in May 2024 to date, with an average of just 2.5 hours per day – compared to the long-term daily average of 5.9 hours for May.”

Sharp but pleasant temperatures are also in line for Sydney, with lows around 13C and 14C, and highs into the low 20s.
