A tropical heatwave is under way in Queensland’s southeast as the state’s temperatures continue to rise to uncomfortable levels.

Southeast Queensland temperatures are expected to skyrocket over the next three days as the state prepares for high humidity and severe thunderstorms.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Helen Kirkup told NCA NewsWire that the state’s southeast’s humidity rate was similar to that of Cairns.

“Humidity is upwards of 50 per cent in some areas in the southeast,” she said.

“You could compare this to that of Cairns, which is quite significant”

Temperatures are expected to peak on Wednesday night at an uncomfortable 36 degrees in parts of the state.

Cooler weather is expected on Thursday as temperatures drop by almost half in some parts of Queensland.

Tropical conditions are expected to serve up severe thunderstorms in Queensland’s central west as moderate flood warnings are issued.
