Beachgoers have been forced to flee the path of a willy willy as it tore down a South Australian beach, picking up everything in its path and flinging it through the air.

The rare event was captured at Rapid Bay Beach - about 100 km south of Adelaide - at about 2pm on Monday, and was later shared on social media.

The footage shows bodyboards, towels and cabanas being thrown through the air as beachgoers grabbed what they could and ran out of the wind’s path.

Issi Schofield was at Rapid Bay when the gusty wind made its way onto the beach from a nearby campsite, telling 7News it happened so quickly.

“A few swags got caught in it first and everyone watched as it make its way to the water pretty quickly,” she told a reporter.

“It took with it clothes, boogie boards, some beach umbrellas and CoolCabanas, going straight through where people were sitting on the beach.

“The best part was that it fizzled out on the water, everyone just went back to normal like nothing much had happened.”
