A SWEDISH artist by the name of Erik Johansson is forging his own artistic genre by seamlessly merging drawing, photography and photoshop to create breathtaking images.
According to his website, although a single image can consist of hundreds of different photos, “he always wants it to look like it could have been captured.”
Mr Johansson grew up with a passion for drawing and was frequently sketching pictures. When that love converged with an interest in computers and his first digital camera at the age of 15, he naturally began to experiment with the kind of images he could create.
For each creation he begins by sketching out his idea. From there, he decides what photos he will need to take in order to provide the initial layer of the picture.
Scouting the right location for these photos can take a long time and involves months of effort, he says.
Once the 29-year-old has the photos he needs, it’s a matter of photoshop wizardry that allows him to create his mind bending images.
His work has received international recognition and led to him giving a TED Talk back in 2011 as well as a seminar at the Adobe Max conference.
While he has produced work for Google, Microsoft and a raft of high profile companies, he prefers to do personal projects where the only limitation is his imagination.
His images take months to create but looking at his artworks it’s not hard to see why he has earned so much attention.
You can see the extraordinary process that goes into each photo in this behind the scenes video below.
