SOCCER: Willowburn will start the Toowoomba soccer season full of confidence.
The club's senior men's and women's teams got their hands on pre-season silverware winning the Winstanley Shield and Tom McVeigh Cup on Wednesday.
Pete Millican fired home a goal late in the men's game to seal a 2-1 win over Rockville.
"There was about 30-seconds left on the clock and we were already looking to extra time,” Willowburn men's coach Nick Rundle said.
"But then Pete popped up with the winner.
"It looked like the Rockville keeper had made a great save but it (the shot) had enough on it to creep home for us.”
Both teams had chances to establish early dominance according to Rundle.
"It was a very direct, fast and physical game,” he said.
"We had chances early in the game but didn't put them away.
"They had their fair share of chances as well.”
In the women's game Willowburn dominated Rockville despite going behind a goal in the first half.
Rockville opened the scoring before Willowburn established a 3-1 half-time lead.
The Magpies didn't ease up in the second half going on to score an 8-2 win.
Rundle said the club was delighted with the results.
"We (Willowburn) have a proud tradition in these competitions,” he said.
"The Winstanley is named after a former Willowburn player.
"We use them as a benchmark for the season and both teams are aiming this year.
"We're very happy and excited to have won both games.”
