AUSSIE RULES: Warwick has taken a big step towards playing finals football with a crucial upset victory.

With Toowoomba looking to secure a top-four spot of its own, a hot start propelled the Redbacks to an 8.11 (59) to 6.11 (47) victory at Rockville Oval.

Warwick came out of the blocks firing, kicking the opening five goals of the match to take a commanding 37-5 lead at halftime.

With the Tigers trailing by 25 heading into the final term, they were able to get close late, but ultimately fell short by two goals.

“We had excellent ball movement in the first half in tricky conditions and were able to show composure when kicking the ball inside 50,” captain Steven Grogan said.

“We lost Tyhe Clarkson late in the first quarter and the boys were able to rally to overcome this setback.

“We knew that the Tigers wouldn’t go away and they came out firing in the second half. They picked up their aggression, tackling pressure, contested ball and were hard to run with as the momentum began to swing.

“It was a must win game for us if we were any chance to play finals. We were super proud of the group for getting over the line.”

The win moves Warwick into sixth on the standings, while Toowoomba holds fourth.

Coolaroo came away from their Goondiwindi trip with an 11.10 (76) to 6.5 (41) defeat of the Hawks.

Adam Green kicked five goals as the visitors held off a third-quarter charge to remain unbeaten in 2021.

South Toowoomba returned to its explosive best with a solid afternoon in front of goals, taking down Dalby 15.8 (98) to 2.5 (17).

Gabe Robbie and Bradley Harrison led the way with four goals.

The fixtures between University and South Burnett were postponed due to the condition of the field.

HAWKS GIVE TIGERS A SCARE

Goondiwindi went close to handing Toowoomba its first loss of the senior women’s season.

Ultimately the Tigers were able to hold strong, coming out 3.5 (23) to 2.5 (17) winners at Riddles Oval.

The Hawks trailed by 11 coming into the final term, and kicked the only goal of the fourth, but Toowoomba found enough to hold them late in the contest.

South Toowoomba flexed its muscles with a big 10.18 (78) to 0.0 (0) win over Dalby.

Brianna Pogany had five goals in the outing as the Bombers hold second spot.
