SCHOOL SPORT: Toowoomba will be looking for its share of the spoils in two of the biggest school competitions starting on Monday.

Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball (QISSN) and the Confraternity Carnival descend on Brisbane, with a strong representation making the trip over the range.

St Joseph’s College will field teams across rugby league and netball, as well as securing their place in history.

The school will field a girls rugby league team in the inaugural competition, and student engagement middle leader Rod Spain said all three teams were keen for a big week ahead.

“The Confro boys have been going for a number of years and this year the girls will be a part of the inaugural competition,” Spain said.

“They’re really keen. We’ve got 21 girls coming away to play league, as well as 10 that will represent the school in netball.

“We’ve got students who want to be involved in all different types of sports. When we put the team together, there was a little bit of a worry about the new sport and contact but they’re all looking forward to a week of footy.”

St Joseph’s will take plenty of confidence into the QISSN after a strong showing which saw them come away with the Downs qualifier at the Vicki Wilson Shield.

“They’re going very well,” Spain said.

“They’ve been training hard and playing in the Wednesday night competition. They took out the Vicki Wilson Shield a couple of weeks ago and they’re looking forward to having a good run at QISSN.”

The Confraternity Carnival will be held at Iona College from Monday, with Brisbane’s Nissan Arena to host QISSN.

Pool games are played over the next two days in the Confro, before the deciders on Friday.

QISSN will feature three days of pool fixtures prior to finals and the last day on Friday.
