RUGBY and Toowoomba Grammar School go hand-in-hand.

The school’s famed rugby program has produced countless stars and memorable moments.

However, a quick glance at Grammar’s history will show another sport has produced more than its fair share of stars and memorable moments.

Some may even argue that Grammar should be known more for its cricket than rugby.

Grammar played its first cricket game in what is now known as the GPS Competition in 1877, just two years after the school was formed, and today marks a special milestone.

The current First XI will line up for the school’s 750th game when they face Brisbane Grammar.

“Our Old Boys have a very strong association with the cricket program,” TGS Old Boys Association president and former First XI player Mark Creedon said.

“Annually there is a 20 year reunion game with the lads from 20 years ago coming back to play the current First XI and present them with their caps.

“It’s quite a highlight for them as they look back and reminisce about their time here and what they’ve gone on to achieve.

“Words like history and tradition getting bandied about, but that is exactly what all this is.

“Cricket is a big part of the school since the first GPS game was played here in 1877.

“It’s a wonderful thing to know you’re part of that history.”

Benjamin Benjamin captained that first side in a clash with long-time rivals Ipswich Grammar, and TGS cricket historian Ivan Board has been part of group chronicling ever Grammar GPS cricket player.

Because of that work, an individually numbered cap is now presented to every First XI player – including current cricketer Wihan Kruger.

“Grammar is steeped in cricket tradition,” Kruger, who is playing against Brisbane Grammar today, said.

“Playing for the First XI is a big achievement and being able to play in this 750th game makes it that much more special.”
