Luckless Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of Wimbledon and the entire grass court season after facing another setback in his never-ending return from injury.
The former Wimbledon finalist has battled a series of knee and wrist injuries in recent years, but has never been able to string a run of tournaments together since making his comeback to competitive play earlier this year in Australia.
“Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – I’ve hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won’t make it back for grass season this year,” Kyrgios wrote on social media.
“I know how much you’ve all been looking forward to seeing me out there, and I’m genuinely sorry to disappoint.
“This is just a bump in the road though, and I’m already working hard to get back stronger than ever.
“Thank you for all your continued support – it means everything to me. See you soon!”
The latest setback has only intensified speculation Kyrgios’ career could be nearing its end.
Kyrgios has won just one of his five singles matches on tour in 2025, including first round losses at the Australian Open and Indian Wells.
He was due to return to action in doubles alongside Jordan Thompson at the French Open last week.
Alarm bells began ringing when his ongoing knee injury flared up during training and he pulled out of his first appearance at Roland Garros in eight years.
It lead to fears his career could be coming to an end.
Thompson revealed that even Kyrgios began questioning his future in the sport.
“He kept messaging me, ‘Are we good for Roland Garros? Are we good for Roland Garros?’” Thompson said following his first round singles exit in Paris.
“(I said) ‘Yeah, we’re good, we’re good’, and then all of a sudden his knee was no good.
“He seemed pretty down. He told me he doesn’t know how many more of these injuries he can take.
“Just have to feel for him, because as much as he says things in the media, I think he loves playing tennis and being on court, so it’s disappointing that he can’t be.”
Kyrgios’ injury woes have been plaguing him since his stellar 2022, when he won a doubles Australian Open title, made the Wimbledon singles final and won a title in Washington.
In 2023, he pulled out on the eve of the Australian Open after an MRI scan revealed a cyst caused by a tear in his lateral meniscus that needed surgery.
A foot injury picked up during an armed robbery at his Canberra home ruled him out of 2023 French Open, before a wrist injury while preparing for Wimbledon saw him sit out the rest of the year.
The same wrist injury sidelined him for all bar a few appearances in 2024 as well, before his stop-start return this year.
Even that return has been shrouded in injury, with Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis retiring in the second set of their first round Australian Open doubles match.
He last took to the court in March with a two-set loss to Karen Khachanov in Miami.
