Australian Jordan Thompson has pulled off one of the upsets of the US Open tournament with a stunning straight sets victory over seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz to secure his ticket into the third round of the grand slam.

Just two days after Thanasi Kokkinakis ousted 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in first round stunner, Thompson delivered a killer performance in the second round against the fancied Polish star to move through to the final 32 and claim one of the biggest wins of his career.

It was the first time Thompson had beaten a top 10 player at a grand slam and he celebrated by mimicking Lleyton Hewitt’s famous ‘c’mon’ celebration as he won match point.

Thompson thundered down 13 aces on his way to a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 7-5 win and will now meet Italy’s 30th seed Matteo Arnaldi in the third round.

Thompson will be joined in the third round by fellow Australians Alex de Minaur and Chris O’Connell who also secured victories on Thursday in New York.

De Minaur, the No.10 seed, won in straight sets over Otto Virtanen 7-5, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) and moves through where he could face either Brit Daniel Evans or Argentina’s Mariano Navone.

O’Connell outlasted Italian Mattia Bellucci 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in just under three hours to secure his path into the third round where he will face world No.1 Jannik Sinner.

Sinner dominated his second round clash with American Alex Michelsen to win 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 in one hour 39 minutes.

They could yet be joined by more Aussies in the third round with wildcard Tristan Schoolkate on court now and Max Purcell due to face US 14th seed Tommy Paul later today.

But the giant-killing run of Kokkinakis came to an abrupt end, he was beaten 4-6, 5-7, 5-7 by Portugal’s Nuno Borges.
