Cruz Hewitt secures first professional tour main draw win in Bali

His father Lleyton famously launched on the professional tennis scene as a teenager, but already Cruz Hewitt has one up on his Dad after a maiden breakthrough win.

Cruz Hewitt, the son of legendary tennis champion Lleyton, has secured the first professional win of his career, beating world number 993 and Netherlands player Thijmen Loof in an ITF 15k event in Bali.

Hewitt won 6-4 6-4 on Wednesday after receiving a wildcard into the tournament.

The 15-year-old dominated the contest from the start, gaining an early break in the first game of the match before taking control of the set with a second break to lead 4-1.

Despite a few nerves towards the end of the first set, including getting broken in the eighth game, Hewitt composed and took the first set 6-4.

The teenager then got on top early in the second set, securing an early break, before Loof fought back, to level the set at 3-3.

But Hewitt showed why he’s already been earmarked as a future star with the youngster showing maturity beyond his years.

He broke in the ninth game of the set before easily serving out the final game of the match to secure his first main draw win on the professional tour.

Hewitt won 15 more points than his rival in the contest while also breaking the Dutchman’s serve four times.

The son of a gun will now have an official ranking after the US Open, when the new rankings are released, which could be see him ranked somewhere around the 2000 mark.

And he’ll have bragging rights over his father with Lleyton’s first main draw win on the professional circuit coming after he had turned 16.

The win caps of a remarkable month for the Gold Coast-based player.

He stormed into the top 100 in the junior rankings after winning back-to-back junior titles in Sydney.

Currently, Cruz is on a 10-game winning streak setting him up perfectly for the next few months with Australia set to host ITF events and Challengers from September to November.

Hewitt will also travel to Turkey to represent Australia in the Junior Davis Cup from November 11 to 17.

The teenager’s next match in Bali will be against fellow Australian and world number 246 Omar Jasika, who is the top seed for the event.
