SQUASH: The quest to find Toowoomba squash’s next Grinham sisters took a big step forward at the weekend.

Natalie and Rachael Grinham dominated world squash in the 2000s and the next star may have been in action at the James St Courts.

Run by QSquash Southern Region head coach Robyn Prentice, the two-day event served as both an introductory and refresher camp.

“We’ve had an amazing weekend at the James St courts,” Prentice said.

“This is one of two camps I’ve hosted recently and here in Toowoomba we had 30 youngsters turn out for the weekend.

“Some of them are already playing competitive squash but we also had many experiencing it for the first time,”

Drawing in players from right across the Darling Downs, the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, it is hoped the camp and tournament in August will help grow the game.

“What we’re trying to do is get the juniors back on a court and excited about squash,” Prentice said.

“The plan is to build a junior club again in Toowoomba.

“We do have a few juniors that have been working hard, but we now have the basis for a developing club.

“We’re encouraging parents to make contact and get their kids involved – squash is a sport that will last you a lifetime.”
