Teenage marvel, Pan Zhanle, rocks Paris in 100m final

The programs start to overlap on day six as the athletics gets underway with the men’s and women’s race walk, while the finals action in the pool is only just getting started.

The women’s 4x200m freestyle relay could be a sure thing for gold as the golden rush in the pool looks to continue, the Aussie Sharks will be looking to follow up their massive win against Serbia, plus a massive day of beach volleyball action with all three Australian teams taking to the sand.

Here’s a taste of what to expect on Thursday.

SWIMMING

Women’s 4x200m freestyle relay

Australia’s team on paper has a SEVEN-second advantage over their nearest rival. Led by individual champion Mollie O’Callaghan, this relay team is perhaps Australia’s safest gold medal. But we thought that in Tokyo, and it didn’t happen. Can they make up for their shock loss three years ago?

ATHLETICS

Men’s and Women’s 20km Race Walk

The athletics program begins with the men’s and women’s 20km race walk. Australia has a genuine medal hope in Jemima Montag after finishing sixth in Tokyo and winning silver at the 2023 World Championships. The races will also feature Declan Tingay, Kyle Swan, Rhydian Cowley, Olivia Sangery and Rebecca Henderson.

WATER POLO

Aussie Sharks v France - Men’s Water Polo group match

Taking on the host nation at an Olympics is never an easy task, but the Sharks will fancy their chances against the French. The Aussies won their most recent match in the lead-up to the Games 10-7 and are fresh off beating the giants of the sport, Serbia.

Men’s and Women’s Eight repechages

The Australian rowing program has gone all-in on their eights for Paris and now is the time for them to shine. Neither boat qualified directly for the final so all eyes will be on them in the repechages to see if they can book their place in the medal race.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Australia women v Canada

It’s Australia Day at the beach volleyball arena with all three Aussie teams in action. The best watch will be Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy who simply must beat their Canadian opponents if they want to go one better than their silver medal in Tokyo.

BASKETBALL

Opals v Canada

After a shocking start to their campaign against Nigeria, the Opals have to bounce back against Canada. The Aussie men couldn’t get it done against the same foe, but can the women produce a performance that sees them finally get on the board?

BMX RACING

Saya Sakakibara - BMX racing quarterfinals

One of the great stories of the Games with comeback queen Saya Sakakibara chasing redemption in Paris. After her brutal crash in Tokyo, she’s back with a point to prove. Sakakibara is the 2024 World Champion and Olympic gold is on her mind.
