The gold medal-winning swimmer feared he would be met off the plane and physically assaulted on his return to the UK.

He contacted model Holly, daughter of TV chef Gordon, who alerted police.

Five armed officers escorted Peaty through Manchester Airport after he flew back from Budapest, Hungary, on Sunday night.

Other officers monitored CCTV to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.

Holly, due to marry him at Christmas, had been at her bachelorette’s party at Soho Farmhouse, Oxfordshire, with mum Tana.

It is feared the threats may be linked to Peaty’s fallout with family, which has been secretly brewing for six months.

“The issues that have been reported don’t stem from hen do or wedding invitations; it goes so much deeper,” a friend said.

“Things escalated over the weekend when someone became increasingly abusive and threatening over text.

“Adam was trying to enjoy his stag do and was getting freaked out by it all.

“He then received a threat that he’d be met off the plane.

“He told Holly who called the cops after consulting with her family.

“Gordon and Tana have been 100 per cent supportive of them in this.

“They are both brilliant in a crisis.

“The police were sufficiently concerned that they went to the airport to accompany him through passport control, baggage area, arrivals hall and into a waiting vehicle.”

The source added: “Police are confident no one turned up at the airport, but Holly did the right thing in making a complaint.”

On Monday, it was revealed the swimmer’s mum Caroline, 59, had been uninvited from the wedding.

The next day her sister Louise said: “Holly and Adam have broken her.”

A family member briefed this newspaper, branding ex-Strictly star Peaty a “narcissist”, and claiming he has had his head turned by the Ramsays’ star power.

The source said: “It’s been a really hard time for all concerned and, of course, Adam would never have wished to fall out with his family like this.

“But there is an undercurrent bubbling away which no one is aware of, and has forced Holly and Adam to draw tighter.

“They must protect their wellbeing, and those immediately around them.”

Greater Manchester Police declined to comment.
