Justin Hodges Medal shared by Charlie Dickson and Zane Harrison

Two elite schoolboys, one from Wavell SHS and the other from Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, have shared the prestigious Justin Hodges Medal as best player of the Langer Trophy.

Palm Beach Currumbin SHS’s Zane Harrison, Broncos champion Justin Hodges and Wavell SHS student Charlie Dickson. Harrison and Dickson jointly won the Justin Hodges Medal for best Langer Trophy player.

Wavell SHS student Charlie Dickson and Palm Beach Currumbin SHS’s Zane Harrison have shared the Justin Hodges Medal as the finest players in the Langer Trophy schoolboy rugby league competition.

Dickson plays No. 13 while Harrison was the PBC SHS halfback and captain in yesterday’s Langer Trophy grand final.

The medal is named after Queensland, Broncos and Australian champion Justin Hodges, who is also a Rooster premiership winner.

“I am grateful to accept the award,‘’ Harrison said.

Dickson added “I am honoured to receive this award. It means a lot to me and means a lot for our school to get recognition as well.”

The last time the medal was shared was in 2022 when Gold Coast Titans’ NRL fullback sensation Keano Kini (PBC SHS) joined another NRL new boy, Canterbury Bulldogs’ rising halves star Karl Oloapu (Wavell SHS), as the competition’s best.

Both Harrison and Dickson were Queensland schoolboy teammates earlier this year and both have NRL contracts.

The Dolphins think so highly of Dickson that they upgraded him to a four-year contract in July.

Dickson is an athletic No. 13 with great footwork and leg speed. He varies the angles of his runs and is also never dead with the ball near the tryline. He was man of the match in the Redcliffe Dolphins under-17 Connell Cup premiership win in April.

“Charlie’s best quality is he is just a ferocious competitor,’’ said Wavell SHS teacher and coach Paul Stanley.

“He competes on every, single play so the opposition has to be at their best to have any chance to contain him.

“As a coach he gives you a lot of confidence when he is on the field as you know what you are going to get from him on every play.’’

Harrison, a Tweed product, is a wonderful organiser, a street smart No. 7 with a powerful running game and elite kicking game.

He has the game to follow in the footsteps of elite past halves from PBC SHS like Toby Sexton (Bulldogs) and Tom Weaver (Titans) and play NRL.
