NRL Late Mail round 7: Jeremy Marshall-King in doubt, Dylan Egan set to play

Dolphins hooker Jeremy Marshall-King is racing the clock to face Melbourne on Good Friday after suffering a sickening gash to his leg that required 20 stitches.

SuperCoach NRL: Buy, Hold, Sell Round 7

Dolphins hooker Jeremy Marshall-King is racing the clock to face Melbourne on Good Friday after suffering a gruesome injury.

Marshall-King sustained a significant cut to his right thigh during last week’s upset win against four-time premiers Penrith.

The deep gash required up to 20 stitches after the game.

Marshall-King also copped a cut to his head during an eventful match.

Cuts don’t usually sideline players, but the leg one is so nasty it requires time to heal before Marshall-King can take the field.

He did not train on Monday given it could re-open if he cops a knock to the area.

Backrower Max Plath is on standby to replace Marshall-King at dummy-half if he is not cleared to play the Storm.

EGAN SET TO PLAY

Boom forward Dylan Egan will take the field for the Dragons against the Sea Eagles on Thursday night provided he gets through captain’s run at Manly Oval.

Egan picked up an elbow injury late in last week’s win over the Titans but has been cleared of serious damage.

The Dragons are staying in Manly on Wednesday night so their south coast contingent don’t have to travel on game day.

GOSIEWSKI COPS BAD BREAK

The Broncos have suffered a major blow with in-form back-rower Jack Gosiewski ruled out for two months with a broken arm.

Gosiewski sustained the injury at Broncos training on Monday and scans confirmed the veteran forward will be sidelined for the next eight weeks.

The five-club journeyman was already scratched from Saturday night’s clash against the Warriors in Auckland after copping a one-match ban for a high shot in Brisbane’s loss to the Roosters last Friday night.

It is another injury setback for the luckless Gosiewski, who suffered a broken arm last year just weeks after arriving at the Broncos in a mid-season transfer from the Cowboys.

The 30-year-old’s lengthy absence opens the door for boom back-rower Brendan Piakura, who missed out on a starting spot in round 1 after coach Michael Maguire rewarded Gosiewski for a bumper pre-season.

Broncos head of performance Dave Ballard confirmed Gosiewski will be sidelined for an extended period.

“Jack is recovering after having surgery on Monday night,” he said.

“At this stage, we expect him to be sidelined for eight weeks.

“He’ll work closely with our rehab team, and we will provide him with all of the support he needs.”
