KFC SuperCoach NRL: Matthew Wight wins $50,000 as SuperCoach champion

The 2022 KFC SuperCoach champion reveals his winning moves and how his mates on the mines gave him the motivation he needed for victory.

Matthew Wight only started playing KFC SuperCoach seriously after being pestered by his workmates in the mines in outback Queensland.

Now he’s $50,000 richer after winning KFC SuperCoach NRL for 2022, beating almost 150,000 competitors to take the major prize.

“I have an addictive personality so if I do something I need to be good at it,” said the 25-year-old, known as ‘Vacant Block’ in fantasy land.

“I started playing a while ago but stopped, I just couldn’t put in enough time”.

“But when I went to the mines and everyone was into it, I was like ‘I’m going to beat these goofs’.

“There is a fierce rivalry between processing and underground. Underground is far more into it. They have two leagues with promotion and relegation, but we (processing) are better.”

Wight works as a chemical engineer in the fly-in-fly-out Cannington Mine, 3.5 hours from Mt Isa.

“The job is more interesting than it sounds. It certainly means I get plenty of time to work on Excel spreadsheets.

“In the last round I had the scores of my own team and the second and third placed teams ticking along on my spreadsheet, so I knew I’d won.”

Wight lives on a sugar cane farm in Ayr, an hour from Townsville and travels to the mine via private charter. And while he took out the $50,000 major prize, his mining mates still got one last laugh.

“The crazy part is that I got knocked out of our league in the semis,” He said. “Yes, I won SuperCoach but lost my league.”

Not only does he win $50,000, but also the inaugural KFC SuperCoach Holy Grail trophy.

And like all top 11 finishers, he also takes home goodies from KFC including a personalised SuperCoach tracksuit with team name, limited edition drink bottle, KFC socks, $100 KFC voucher and a Steeden footy.

“It’s been the longest few days of my life, the phone hasn’t stopped,” Wight said.

“It was crazy getting calls and texts from so many people and hearing voices on the phone I’d heard in podcasts.

“But the hardest part is trying to explain to people with no idea of SuperCoach how I actually won $50,000. That’s a five-minute chat at least.”

THE WINNING TRADE

“My last trade was always going to be Taylan May to someone.

“I was tossing up Cameron Murray (who got concussed after one minute for the Rabbitohs and scored just one point) but decided to go with Valentine Holmes (who scored 133 in the final round).”

BEST TRADES

1) “I was one of the first to get on Joe Tapine, I bought him in Round 11.” Tapine went on to notch the second best average of any FRF or 2RF from that point onwards.

2) “I bought Reuben Garrick, Joey Manu, Dylan Edwards and Angus Crichton with my Trade Boost for the final bye.”

WORST TRADE

“I don’t think you’ll find anyone in the top 1,000 who went Jamayne Taunoa-Brown to Spencer Leniu in round three.”

Leniu averaged 29.3 for the season and lost $48,000 despite starting at a bargain price.
