‘Shouldn’t be tolerated’: Latrell Mitchell doubles down on hefty ban for Spencer Leniu

Latrell Mitchell didn’t mince his words when he landed in Sydney, with the Rabbitohs superstar urging NRL bosses to come down hard on Spencer Leniu if he’s found guilty.

South Sydney fullback Latrell Mitchell has again called for the NRL judiciary to hand Spencer Leniu a monster ban if found guilty of a contrary conduct charge, with the Indigenous All Stars captain throwing his support behind Ezra Mam.

The Broncos five-eighth was allegedly called a “monkey” by Leniu during Sunday’s game in Las Vegas, with Mitchell and several high-profile players calling for a lengthy ban in a bid to stamp out racism in the game.

Mitchell landed in Sydney on Thursday morning and was asked for his thoughts, with Leniu’s manager coming out on Wednesday and urging the RLPA to stop players and coaches from commenting on the situation that might influence the judiciary panel.

“For me it’s about making sure Ezra Mam is all right. I think after the game … it’s stuff that shouldn’t be tolerated and rubbed out of the game,” he said.

“I hope Peter (V’landys) and Andrew Abdo take serious consideration to the way this should be dealt with. For me, it opens up a lot of wounds and scars for my people and my family. You do have to understand the way we feel.”

Broncos players reportedly confronted Leniu at the hotel after the game following his comments to Triple M where he said it was “fun and games” on the field.

What made it worse was that the teams shared a flight the following day, which Broncos hooker Billy Walters conceded was fairly awkward.

“A little bit, but I think it all started to simmer down a little bit and I think everyone was pretty keen just to get home and they didn’t want any more dramas,” he told Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux & Dan.

“He (Mam) is doing well.

“He’s got a lot of support through the boys and all the club at the Broncos, so I think that’s definitely lifted his spirits a bit knowing that he’s not alone and that we don’t stand for that.”

“We got his back no matter what happens and we’ll just move forward from there.”

Leniu will front the judiciary next Tuesday in what will be one of the most explosive hearings at Rugby League Central.
