Selwyn Cobbo comment sparks Broncos exit rumours after starring in Reece Walsh’s absence

Broncos star Selwyn Cobbo’s performance on Thursday night saw fans calling for him to replace Reece Walsh, but it appears he has his sights set on other things.

Cobbo gets fullback nod with Walsh out

Brisbane looked the best they have all season on Thursday night battering the Bulldogs 42-18 as Selwyn Cobbo was unlocked at fullback in Reece Walsh’s absence.

Cobbo was shifted into the No. 1 jumper ahead of their clash with the Dogs with Walsh out for several weeks with a PCL injury, and in just one game the 22-year-old showed that fullback is where he is meant to be.

Michael Ennis said in Fox Sports commentary: “He’s been impressive tonight Selwyn Cobbo stepping in for Reece Walsh. He’s been busy and has shown some great skill.

“His physicality, the way he’s returned the ball this year has been great, but tonight at fullback it’s really unlocked him.”

However, with Brisbane locking down Walsh on a staggering $5 million extension ahead of the 2025 season, it appears highly unlikely he would take the No. 1 jersey off him.

Therefore Cobbo’s future at Red Hill is clouded in uncertainty, with his current contract worth around $650,000 a season up at the end of the year.

With several of the club’s biggest stars on bumper deals come 2026, Michael Maguire will have to make cuts to abide by salary cap regulations.

So while Maguire has reiterated his desire to keep Cobbo at the club, the 22-year-old’s performance at fullback has likely made it almost impossible to do so.

And Cobbo has further sparked rumours he may decide to leave Red Hill, stating he is not a winger but a fullback and wants to follow in the footsteps of his idol Greg Inglis.

“He (Greg Inglis) was my idol growing up, I loved how he played footy,” Cobbo told AAP.

“GI was one of the greats to play the sport and I just want to make my own name and show what Selwyn Cobbo can do.

“I have been watching what I’ve been eating and doing extra conditioning to get more metres in games and do more work for the team.

“I just love being around the action, not on the wing. I like being around the middle. I feel more free with the ball. I can run the ball at any time. I get involved more. That’s what I love doing, getting involved.”

The Queensland representative’s ability to slot in on the wing, at centre or fullback makes him an attractive option for many clubs.

New franchises set to enter the NRL in 2027, Perth and PNG will almost certainly be keen on his services.

Where he will be in 2026, is so far unknown but there is sure to be no shortage of suitors for his signature.
