Brisbane superstar Reece Walsh has conceded a video of him punching another man “is not a good look”, as he prepares to face a club investigation into viral footage posted on social media.
This masthead has passed on the footage to Broncos chief executive Dave Donaghy and Walsh’s manager Nash Dawson to seek an explanation.
Walsh broke his silence over the latest saga to plague the Broncos on Wednesday morning.
“Just having a laugh with my mate, obviously. You know we don’t support violence and stuff like that, but obviously, it’s not a good look for myself and that was all [me] trying to have a laugh and a good time with friends,” Walsh said on the Today Show.
“There’s a really cool jersey coming out that we should be talking about and not letting this overshadow it.”
Walsh had also taken to social media on Tuesday night to explain his actions.
“Just to add context to the video recently posted - it was a joke with me (sic) best mate,” he wrote.
“No one was harmed, boys being boys.”
WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND IS WHY
Donaghy spoke on the matter on Wednesday morning, saying he would hold immediate talks with Walsh when he reports for training at Red Hill.
“I haven’t spoken to Reece directly as yet. I’ll do that later today,” Donaghy told 4BC radio.
“I’ve only briefly seen the video.
“I certainly acknowledge Reece’s comment there, but we’ll have a conversation with him.”
Donaghy conceded it was a poor look for the club at a time when the Broncos are struggling following five losses in six games.
The Broncos boss wouldn’t speculate on possible sanctions but is bemused by players posting some social-media content.
Asked if he is disappointed, Donaghy said: “It’s one of those things, what I don’t understand is why, maybe I’m just a different generation, why we need to post these things.
“But as I say, we’ll have that conversation with Reece internally and deal with it in-house.
“They’re always the conversations we have internally.
“We’re dealing with young men that have a significant following. So, look, it’s certainly, without a doubt, not ideal.
“Again, I’ve only briefly seen it, but we’ll have that conversation internally and deal with it, step it through with Reece.”
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A JOKE
Walsh’s manager Dawson said: “They’re best mates. It was supposed to be a joke.”
The Queensland Origin star, currently injured, launched his own YouTube channel on Sunday just hours after Brisbane’s loss to the Dragons.
It is understood the incident took place on Saturday night the day before Brisbane’s game against the Dragons.
The video appears to show Walsh at a gathering with friends where the fullback is wearing a boxing glove before he strikes a man in the head and knocks him to the ground.
Foolishly Walsh posted the video himself on Tik Tok before later removing it.
Not before the video was posted on X, but has since been taken down.
The Broncos are privately furious that Walsh acted so stupidly to not only punch the man but then post the video on social media.
Walsh has been sidelined since the round seven game against the New Zealand Warriors with a posterior cruciate ligament injury.
Any hint of player misbehaviour at a time the Broncos have lost five of their last six games is the last thing embattled coach Michael Maguire needs to be dealing with.
