We told you this was happening 12 months ago.
Deep inside the Wests Tigers’ dressing sheds in Wollongong in June last year after a 56-14 loss to St George Illawarra, Lachlan Galvin was struggling to come to terms with the club’s ninth straight defeat.
As I wrote back then in Monday Buzz: “Galvin was overheard in the Wests Tigers’ dressing room saying that he wanted out, despite being under contract until the end of 2026.”
Predictably, the story was denied by all and sundry.
Fast forward 10 months and it’s now official.
Despite the most lucrative contract in Wests Tigers’ history being on the table, his manager Isaac Moses is dragging him away to another club.
And I don’t like it.
The Wests Tigers have been very good to Galvin.
Yet he and his manager think he can develop his game and become a more complete footballer at another club.
This is a terrible and unwarranted thumbs down to coach Benji Marshall.
Under Benji’s tutelage, Galvin has emerged as the game’s most exciting prospect in more than a decade.
The 19-year-old could not have been handed a smoother introduction to NRL football by any coach at any club.
The emerging playmaker was handed the five-eighth jersey at the start of last season, with the promise of partnering him up with incoming signing, Jarome Luai, this year, and building the club around their halves partnership.
The shame about all this is that the Wests Tigers are finally on an exciting march forward after three wooden spoons.
They’re in seventh spot with three wins from their opening six games, and two of their losses were by just two points.
They could even play finals football this year.
But here is a youngster who doesn’t want to be there.
No loyalty to the club that gave him his start.
Sadly that’s modern-day rugby league.
