Beloved NRL legend Ryan Girdler has announced he is stepping away from his role with Triple M for family reasons.

The former Kangaroo and premiership-winning centre has been a regular on the network for more than a decade, with roles on the Saturday Scrum and as a match commentator.

In that time he has built a reputation as one of the best colour commentators in the sport.

But ahead of the 2025 NRL season, Girdler has relinquished his role with the network so he can support his family, according to Code Sports.

Girdler’s father-in-law, who lives in Europe, is battling health issues and it is understood the 52-year-old wants to be by his wife’s side to support her.

The NRL legend has been at Triple M since the network began calling rugby league in 2012, and his unbiased input and expertise quickly made him a fan favourite.

“It’s been an amazing journey at Triple M working alongside some great and very talented people,” Girdler said.

“I’ll miss it but at the moment I have other things to do and I could be away for an extended period.”

Triple M’s head of sport Ewan Giles threw his support behind Girdler and said he supports his decision to put family first.

“We fully support Girds and his decision to put his family first in 2025,” Giles said.

“I want to thank him for everything he has done for Triple M NRL and we wish him well for the next stage of his life. He is and will always be a member of the Triple M NRL team.”

The network wasted little time replacing him, with Nathan Hindmarsh already agreeing to replace him.

The Eels great is known for his laid-back style and snappy humour and is a solid acquisition for the network.

“I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be fun in what’s going to be a great season,” Hindmarsh said.

“I’m a bit nervous but it’s probably a little more relaxed than TV without the camera in your face. Hopefully not too relaxed in case I say something I probably shouldn’t say.”
