Josh Reynolds set for farewell game at spiritual home after announcing retirement

There will be emotional scenes on Saturday when a favourite son runs out for the Bulldogs for the final time.

Bulldogs legend Josh Reynolds has told teammates that he’s retiring from rugby league, with the veteran playmaker to run out one last time on Saturday in the NSW Cup in what will be his farewell game.

The local junior played in two grand finals for the Bulldogs and returned to the club this season after stints with the Wests Tigers and for Hull in the English Super League.

He played seven games this season but hasn’t lined up in first grade since the round 11 loss to the Warriors.

The 34-year-old was chaired off Belmore Sports Ground in 2017 for what he thought would be his final game at Canterbury’s spiritual home, but he’ll get the chance for one more farewell against North Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Reynolds’ decision to retire from professional rugby league came just days after he gave up his top-30 spot so the club could fit former Titan Toby Sexton into the squad.

The selfless act helped the Bulldogs beat the Rabbitohs on Saturday night, just six days after they were embarrassed 66-0 by the Knights.

The hill at Belmore has been renamed the “Josh Reynolds Hill” for Saturday’s double-header that is expected to be sold out when the Bulldogs host the Broncos at 3pm.

Face masks will be handed out to fans who attend the game to celebrate the career of one of Canterbury’s most passionate players.
