Phil ‘Buzz’ Rothfield reveals his highlights and lowlights from the week in sport, including the Roosters player set to leave the club due to the arrival of Daly Cherry-Evans.
HIGHLIGHT
James Tedesco has always been a good captain. This year he has become a great one.
The Roosters last year lost Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Luke Keary and Joey Manu, who were all leaders.
This year Tedesco, with the help of Victor Radley, has stepped up to steer the rookie Roosters with inspiring leadership.
LOWLIGHT I
Such a flat build up to State of Origin. Latrell and Spencer Leniu are on media bans while Laurie Daley and Billy Slater are the world’s nicest blokes and won’t say anything even mildly provocative or controversial.
LOWLIGHT II
The planned closure of Dapto dogs after 88 years of greyhound racing. Thursday night racing just won’t be the same without the dishlickers dashing around the iconic South Coast Track.
FOXX EXTENSION
The Parramatta Eels have taken up a one-year option on winger Josh Addo-Carr, who has scored seven tries in nine appearances this year. The 29-year-old former Origin and Kangaroos winger is just three tries short of the 150 mark in his 10th NRL season.
SHOOSH
With old Daly Cherry-Evans heading to the Roosters, we’re hearing Anzac Day medallist Sandon Smith will quit the Chooks at the end of the season. His likely destination is the North Queensland Cowboys. It comes after another outstanding performance from halfback Hugo Savala and five-eighth Smith against Cronulla on Saturday which had everyone in rugby league asking why the Roosters would bother signing Cherry-Evans, who turns 37 in February.
SPOTTED I
NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo enjoying a rare Saturday afternoon off with lunch at Bondi Icebergs with his family.
SPOTTED II
The NSW State of Origin women’s team enjoying some perfume shopping at the DFO in Homebush.
SPOTTED III
Original NSW Blue Jimmy Leis at the Kirra Hotel on Saturday with player agent Steve ‘Chimes’ Gillis and celebrity Eastern Suburbs publican Bobby Tate.
