FORMER Adelaide Thunderbirds goal shooter Carla Borrego will likely play her first game for Garville next week when she returns from a stint in the English Superleague.
But Borrego’s addition to the Premier League side’s line-up may cost present Thunderbirds goaler Karyn Bailey the chance to take to the court alongside the Jamaican because Garville is at the player-points limit.
Under competition rules, clubs cannot allocate more than 10 points across their league and reserve teams in any given round.
Borrego costs the maximum five points because she is a former national league player and Garville coach Jackie Blyth said Bailey would be available this Friday night but would probably be forced out of the team once Borrego slotted in. Blyth said Borrego should not cost the club any points because it had signed her in 2015.
“She should be coming back to her original club but they (Netball SA) are disagreeing with us,” Blyth said.
“Karyn Bailey desperately wants to play. Carla wants to play but we’d love to have Karyn as well.”
Netball SA chief executive Ben Scales said teams were required to comply with the player points system, which was a club-driven initiative.
