White-hot Broc Feeney extends Supercars lead, breaks drought at the Townsville 500

Supercars’ series leader Broc Feeney’s winless run did not last long as his white-hot form continued in Townsville.

Supercars series leader Broc Feeney’s winless run ended at just one race as the Red Bull Racing star stormed to victory in an action-packed race at the Townsville 500 on Saturday.

Feeney had won five straight races this season before a qualifying flop saw him settle for eighth in the 100km opening race in the North Queensland capital yesterday. It was his first race win in Townsville.

If his rivals were hoping it would halt the 22-year-old’s momentum they were dead wrong as he added a ninth win for the season, while avoiding early drama at Reid Park that began with a huge crash on lap three.

“The turnaround from this team overnight has been pretty fantastic,” Feeney said.

“I had my doubts coming into today, but we made some changes for the shootout and the car was a rocket ship.

“Chaz and I were talking after the race how it was funny that yesterday we were both fighting over 10th place yesterday and then we’re both out front today. So it’s crazy how quick things can turn around.

“But yeah, the crew did a fantastic job, obviously on the car, but also pit stops as well, to sort of shape that race.”

Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert finished in second after an incredible drive where he finished 15 spots higher than his starting spot on the grid, while Matt Payne continued his consistent season to take third.

Early drama rocked the second race of the Townsville 400 with title contender Cam Waters making a miraculous escape from a lap one crash that led to carnage.

The incident saw Jaxon Evans shunt James Golding that saw him driving on two wheels before a major crash into the barrier ended his race just seconds after it started.

Evans didn’t escape unscathed and while he raced on for a few more laps his team called him in for an early end. In the same prang Friday’s runner-up Waters produced the save of the season after he was spun 360 degrees and somehow escaped with just minor panel damage.

The safety car lap was out for a second time in the opening 13 laps with a blown engine issue ending fan favourite’s James Courtney race, dampening what had been a wonderful day where he qualified fifth fastest.

Pole position winner David Reynolds, who started from first for the first time since Newcastle in 2023, surrendered first place to Payne in the opening seconds and couldn’t keep pace with the frontrunners to end in tenth place.

Mostert and WAU teammate Ryan Wood (eighth place) combined to overtake a whopping 31 cars across the 200km race, with both drivers to take plenty of confidence into Sunday’s Townsville 500 finale.

“I was very lucky at the start of the race, and no doubt, Woody as well, that a few people got into some accidents,” Mostert said.

“It’s not like it was 31 traditional passes, but we survived the chaos buried in the pack and the team did a fantastic job to put us in the position.

“I really like how Broc spoke about him and Will, and how they work together, and it’s been a real strength for me and Woody this year as well so no doubt we’ll try and learn some more tonight and be a bit stronger tomorrow.”

Feeney now holds a 201-point lead in the overall standings from Payne, with Red Bull teammate Will Brown 210 points back after a fourth-place finish today.

Supercars action resumes on Sunday with Qualifying at 10.05am, followed by the Top Ten Shootout at 12.05pm before the final race of the weekend, Race 22, at 3pm.
