Supercars star Nick Percat agrees to long-term deal with Matt Stone Racing

Supercars star Nick Percat has claimed his latest personal victory during a resurgent season, penning a deal to stay at Matt Stone Racing until at least the end of 2027.

Percat is currently in some of the best form of his 15-year professional racing career, sitting fourth overall in the driver’s championship heading into this weekend’s Townsville 500.

The Adelaide-born driver said it was an easy decision to extend his time with Matt Stone Racing after he joined the team at the end of 2023.

“The moment I went there last year for this current contract, I fit in extremely well,” Percat said.

“Nothing was too hard for anyone at MSR and I think what Matt’s got going on there, he probably doesn’t get enough credit of what they’re doing.

“The results have been really good so it was a pretty easy discussion with Matt, that we wanted to continue it right into the future.”

The 35-year-old racer’s move to MSR almost 12 months ago sparked something in Percat that hadn’t been seen in years.

Between 2018 and 2021, Percat finished in the top 10 of the championship four years in a row before a major drop-off.

But after two poor seasons for Walkinshaw Andretti United in 2022 (15th) and 2023 (20th overall), Percat has returned to stride and that was evident when he claimed his first race win in 1365 days earlier this year in Race 6 in Melbourne.

“The MSR Camaro has been solid. From the first lap I did in it, it was great,” Percat said.

“The race results have been good, we had a win and sit fourth in the championship so I think anytime you’re inside that top five you can’t really complain too much.

“It’s a pretty cutthroat championship these days so the car has performed really well all year and the whole Bendix family has been great to work with as well.”

Percat said the sky was the limit when it came to what MSR could achieve over the tenure of his new long-term deal.

“This year we want to finish in the top five in the championship. If we achieve that it’d be great for the team, obviously we’re a very young team so it’d be a big result for them,” he said.

“Then just continue to build on that and hopefully keep that momentum going in years to come and end up at a point where we’re trying to fight for championships.

“But we’re still in the very early stages of the team so not trying to get too carried away too early.”

The Townsville 500 begins this weekend with a race on Saturday and Sunday.
