A driver was able to walk away from a spectacular high-speed crash in the opening on-track session at the Tasmania SuperSprint at Symmons Plains on Saturday morning, while later in the main game a rookie went spinning in what could have been disaster, as wet weather plagues the event.
Racing in the Tassie Tin Tops category, driver Charlie Williscroft skidded off the circuit and crashed into a tyre wall before the car became airborne and spun.
Williscroft walked away from the incident moments later, but his car was badly damaged.
The tyre wall was repaired and sessions resumed shortly afterwards.
Wet weather was expected to play its part in Saturday’s Supercars sessions with showers predicted throughout the day.
Scary near miss
Later on, Supercars rookie Aaron Love felt like a “ballerina” after his car launched into a scary spin down the main straight in wet and wild conditions at the Tasmania SuperSprint.
As Supercars hit the track for their second practice session on a saturated track at Symmons Plains on Saturday, the Blanchard Racing Team driver lost control entering pit straight.
Love’s Mustang spun several times before coming to a stop midway along the straight where his car was left vulnerable in the path of the high-speed traffic.
As Love tried to find reverse to get his car back on track, he was lucky to avoid a serious incident as he came close to getting collected by the oncoming field.
“I was really just hanging on for a bit of it, I felt like a ballerina,” Love said of his spin.
“The scary part was trying to get the thing out of there because obviously everyone is coming through to finish their lap and trying to get reverse in these things is not too easy.
“But I was just holding a lot of lock into it and hoping for the best.”
Love was not the only rookie to find trouble with Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Ryan Wood also running off the track in the wet at the hairpin and getting his Ford stuck in the gravel.
Kiwi Richie Stanaway, who has lost his Grove Racing seat to young gun Kai Allen for next year, topped the second practice session in the wet conditions ahead of Cam Waters and Chaz Mostert.
