Melbourne teammate Tariq Sims spent half the night at Ryan Papenhuyzen’s bedside as Storm officials are confident the latest setback won’t end his career.
Papenhuyzen had six screws and a plate inserted into his leg after undergoing successful surgery on Saturday morning.
Sims, who has undergone his own serious comeback from a leg injury, was among the Storm players and officials who spent time alongside Papenhuyzen in hospital overnight.
Papenhuyzen faces another long stint on the sidelines after his latest setback.
However, Storm head of football Frank Ponissi said he expected Papenhuyzen to continue with his rugby league career.
“We’re obviously devastated for Ryan suffering another setback after spending a significant time away from the game after injuring his knee last year,” Ponissi said.
“He’s worked extremely hard to get back to the NRL over that time and left no stone unturned in his recovery.
“We know that he is the ultimate professional on and off the field and this is just another challenge that he will take on with both hands.
“His surgery went well this morning and, at this stage, we expect him to be back training in the new year but for now we’re focused on ensuring he is getting the right care.”
Papenhuyzen took a selfie in hospital on Friday night to post onto his social media account with the caption: “We go again, love ya.”
