RUGBY LEAGUE: Over 4500 games of rugby league experience will descend on Toowoomba next month.

A star-studded line-up will take to the Jack Martin Centre on November 13 as the International Legends of League roll into town.

Boasting the likes of Scott Prince, Ben Hannant and Justin Hodges, the Australians will take on a team comprising of Toowoomba’s own local legends, including Don Saunders, David Anderson and Michael Witt.

While the match will take centre stage, organiser Troy Byers said the chance for young kids to meet ex-NRL legends is a highlight.

“They can come and meet their heroes and just walk up to them. They can walk up to them and get a signature,” Byers said.

“We’ve had some massive events in Moranbah, Mt Isa, Blackwater and Alice Springs this year. One thing that Covid has taught is to appreciate the events when they come, because they’re something we don’t get all the time.”

Oakey’s own Craig Teevan will line up for Australia, with the former Crushers captain and Queensland representative wanting to have an impact in the community post-football.

He said getting out to schools in the lead-up to the match was just as important.

“It’s good to give back to the community,” Teevan said.

“Messaging in the schools around anti-bullying and Dream, Believe, Achieve, as well as a big fundraiser for local sport.

“In the past we’ve seen that it increases participation numbers. The testimonials we get from schools is one of the things we’re most proud of.

“The funds that we raise on game day through beverages and food stay locally with the junior clubs and put more back into education and facilities for the kids.”

Teevan, who also helps with organisation for the group, said players were more than happy to come on-board.

“We get around to a number of events, but it wasn’t hard getting the players to come and do this one,” he said.

“We’ve got some big names and I’m sure the public will be impressed, not only by the Australian team but the local players as well.

“A lot of those players were very well known in the community and I’m sure a lot will want to come out and see them play.”

Kids, women’s and mens matches will feature on the day.
