MITCHELL HAY

The Taroom State High School student has a wealth of experience for a young man.

Playing seniors with Taroom-Wandoan in the Chinchilla competition, Hay averaged a wicket per game last season, and was a member of the DDSWQ Lord’s Taverners team.

“He’s a bit of a surprise package. It’s not too often they come from right out west,” manager Louis Reen said.

“He’s a big, tall fast bowler that is a bit of a raw talent which is good to see.”

JACK RAGH

A student at Scots PGC in Warwick, Ragh has been in fine form this season.

Has best figures of 3/18 for Colts in Warwick’s senior competition, and has taken 11 wickets in three B-grade games for University in Toowoomba.

“He’s a left-arm quick from Warwick in his third year of trialling for the team,” Reen said.

“He’s a lot taller and stronger, and has persevered to get his way in there.”

SEWMITH SAMARAWICKRAMA

The Sri Lankan-born Samarawickrama is no stranger to this level of play.

A student at Toowoomba Grammar School, he was chosen in the Queensland merit team last year, and has also represented Australia in futsal.

“He got called into the state side last year as an all-rounder,” Reen said.

“He’s injured his ankle so we’re not sure if he can bowl this week, but he is a very experienced quick who will probably captain with a few others.”

KADE MARTIN

The Lockyer District SHS batsman has been in strong form across all levels this year.

Playing for Ipswich in the Lord’s Taverners competition, Martin is also part of the Gatton Fordsdale A-grade team where he is averaging 37.50 runs per game.

“Kade is a big, strong batsman in the middle order,” Reen said.

“He hits the ball a long way, he just needs to get a star. He’s a very strong kid for his age.”

COOPER WEBSTER

The Toowoomba Grammar School student brings incredible form into next week’s tournament.

Webster was man of the match for University in the Harding-Madsen Shield division two grand final, averaging 32 with the bat and 11 with the ball for the season, as well as playing for Ipswich in the Lord’s Tavs.

“Cooper was in the side last year and is a tie-down spinner,” Reen said.

“He bowls good right-arm offies and his batting has improved a heap in the last year or two.”

GAUTAM MALHOTRA

A talented spinner that is improving with the bat is Toowoomba Grammar student Gautam Malhotra.

The young gun took eight wickets in the Lord’s Tavs season for DDSWQ, and had best figures of 4/16 for Grammar.

“Gautam is a left arm spinner that is tricky to get away, and a talented batsman,” Reen said.
“He can hold a stick and is a tidy bowler. He’s real quality.”

JOE SIPPEL

Toowoomba Grammar student Joe Sippel will take the reins as wicketkeeper for the Darling Downs charge.

Has been exemplary at the schoolboy level this year, posting five scores of 40 or more, including an unbeaten century.

“Joe will be our keeper and opening bat,” Reen said.

“He’s from a long ling of Sippels in the Lockyer and is a smart cricketer. He’s very good square of the wicket.”

RYAN HINES

The Stanthorpe SHS student is another Downs product mixing it with the men in A-grade cricket.

For RSL in the Stanthorpe competition, he’s taken seven wickets in four games at an average of 12.29 for the season, and played with DDSWQ in the Lord’s Taverners competition.

“Ryan is another all-rounder with a tidy technique as a batsman,” Reen said.

“He’s a Stanthorpe boy that bowls very handy off-spin. He gives it a real rip.”

Brady has best figures of 3/17 for the season, and was one of DDSWQ’s most consistent in the Lord’s Tavs, averaging 29 with the bat and taking 12 wickets.

“Rohan is another all-rounder from Stanthorpe,” Reen said.

“He bowls leg spin and is very solid with his consistency.”

CORMACK WAINWRIGHT

The Downlands College student has represented the Darling Downs in cricket and touch football.

Wainwright was among the leading wicket takers for DDSWQ in the Lord’s Taverners competition, taking 13 wickets for the year.

“Cormack is our first change bowler,” Reen said.

“He is a medium-pace bowler that is very consistent with his line and length. He can bowl long spells and is a fit kid.”

ANGUS TOWN

The lone Dalby Christian College representative in the side, Town return to the Darling Downs side after playing last year.

Is strong with the bat as evidenced by a good DDSWQ campaign, including a best score of 82 not out.

“Angus comes back from last year,” Reen said.

“He’s a good all-round top order bat and probably has the strongest music selection in the team.”

LACHLAN SPIES

Another of the Toowoomba Grammar School brigade, Spies will take the lead with the ball for the Downs.

Played for Ipswich in the Lord’s Tavs and was unstoppable for Grammar in the 10A GPS, taking eight wickets at an average of 9.

“Lachlan will be one of our key quicks for the week,” Reen said.

“He’s a Grammar boy that opens the bowling and is handy with the bat as well.”

KYE MARTIN

The Toowoomba Christian College students adds an all-round element to the squad.

Boasts a top score of 55 for Highfields-Railways in Toowoomba’s reserve grade, and proved he could take wickets at any given moment for DDSWQ in the Lord’s Taverners competition.

“Kye was injured at the trials but is a very good all-rounder,” he said.

“His biggest asset is a golden arm in the field. In and around the circle, he’s lethal.”
