The Cavaliers have powered into the 19-and-under grand final after a powerful 30-goal win over the minor premier Northern Hawks.

Rising star Sophie Brewer made the circle her own for the Cavaliers with a game-high 39 goals to take the contest away from her side’s local rivals.

It was a matter of the Cavs controlling the game in the second half after breaking out to a 20-goal lead at half-time.

Mollie Poulton proved to be the perfect foil to Brewer’s game after pouring in 20 goals of her own.

The Hawks’ premiership hopes still remain alive as they now prepare to take on the Cripps for a place in the decider.

Emily O’Connor shot well for the Hawks with 18 goals.

OPEN SEMI-FINAL REVIEW

They came close, yet again, but Cavaliers still can’t find a way past Tasmanian Netball League big guns Northern Hawks.

Led by Ash Mawer’s 46 goals, the Hawks became the first team into the grand final by beating the Cavaliers 57-51 on Saturday.

The Hawks led at every change, gradually building on a two-goal quarter time cushion to lead by five at halftime and nine at thre-quarter time.

Cavaliers took the honours in a high-quality final quarter 17-14, but the damage was done earlier.

The Hawks get next week off while the Cavaliers get another shot at reaching the decider.

PREVIEW

Cavaliers recruit Olivia Harman will lean on her team’s wealth of finals experience after describing her move to the club as an “eye opener” before Saturday’s qualifying final against Hawks.

Harman made the shift from Devon this year, and has been a mainstay in a Cavs line-up keen to thwart the unbeaten Hawks’ quest for a third straight TNL senior title.

The 20-year-old wing attack said pushing for a spot in the strong squad was the challenge she needed as the Cavs look to go one better than last year’s grand final defeat to their cross town rivals.

All open and 19 and under finals in week one will be live streamed on Kommunity TV and the Hobart Mercury.

“It’s been a big step up from last season, with my roles and responsibilities on court and off as well. The Cavs girls with that professionalism and elite sporting culture have just been really good,” Harman said.

“It’s been easy to slot into that role and it’s been a good challenge for me to push myself physically and mentally.”

The Cavs have a handful of young players including Harman and defenders Paige O’Neill and Lily Case, who have stepped up into seniors this year.

“For me it’s been good to get around the girls who have been in these finals positions previously,” Harman said.

“I think their experience has been really good for me and a couple of the other younger girls.”

The Cavs lost by a goal in the last Launceston derby in round 12, after losing this year’s first encounter by 19.

They led by three goals with just over three minutes to play, but the Hawks found a way to win.

“We’ve had a look back and analysed the thing we could do better,” Harman said.

“The last three minutes we’ve done a lot of work on scenarios, like being down by a goal with 30 seconds to go. We’re putting ourselves in those positions at training so when it comes down to the crunch time moments on the weekend, we’re ready to perform and hopefully pull out a win.”

Hawks co-captain and defender Tessa Coote didn’t play in the last meeting, while Case is set to play a full game for the first time in weeks after managing an ankle issue.

The Hawks also finished top in the under-19s and will play Cavs in the qualifying final on Monday night, also at the Silverdome.

Coote feels their tight tussle against Cavs last start was a timely test.

“Sometimes you need a close game like to realise what you have to work on and really push it for the next one,” she said.

“Both Hawks teams have finished top of the ladder which we’ve never done before, so that was huge for us.

“It (playing Cavs in both qualifying finals) shows how strong the talent is in the north. We love the rivalry with Cavs because off court we’re good friends with them, but on court we give it our best shot.”
