Two teams boasting some of Super Netball’s best next generation stars will play in a grand final on Sunday that will decide the champions of the nation’s second-tier league.

The West Coast Fever and Melbourne Mavericks will feature in the Super Netball Reserves grand final in an epic that will be livestreamed by KommunityTV.

Among the elite athletes on show will be Melbourne Mavericks’ goaler Eleanor Cardwell who will take to the court for her first game of the season in Sunday’s clash.

DAY 2 REPLAYS

Northern Territory Storm v Sunshine Coast Lightning

The Sunshine Coast Lightning has started its Super Netball Reserves finals campaign with a 31 goal win over the Northern Territory Storm.

The Lightning burst out of the blocks to take a 19-6 lead by the end of the first quarter and from there the Queensland side never looked like being caught, recording a 73-32 win.

Sunshine Coast played with a pace the Territory couldn’t match and despite showing promise and creating ample opportunities the Storm couldn’t compose themselves enough to hit the target when needed.

Kaylin van Greunen scored 34 goals and was well supported by Sally Jenkins (21) while Natalie Sligar was a rock in defence.

Capital Darters v Adelaide Thunderbirds

The Adelaide Thunderbirds Futures have produced the biggest score of the Super Netball Reserves finals to smash the Capital Darters by 49 goals.

The Thunderbirds kept the Darters to single figures in the first three quarters while scoring at will on Saturday before going on to win 85-36 at the Waverley Netball Centre.

The first quarter ended 23-7 in a comprehensive display from a Thunderbirds team that forced the Darters to change nearly every position on the court ahead of the second term.

Adelaide’s centres squeezed the Capitals and forced their rivals to attempt low percentage passes, turning the ball over frequently before scoring big.

Lucy Austin scored an incredible 66 goals, her tall and imposing presence enabling Adelaide to shift the ball quickly inside the attacking semi-circle in offence in a dominant display from the goal shooter.

Tasmania Wild v Giants Netball

A spirited Tasmania Wild outfit well and truly lost no fans in its clash against Giants Netball on Saturday.

The underdogs from the Apple Isle almost pulled off one of the upsets of the Super Netball Reserves Finals Series but fell short 53-49 in a seesawing battle.

While it was Giants shooter Monika ‘Otai that top scored with 34 goals, the true highlight was another star marking performance from Tasmania’s goal attack in Sophie Brewer.

The talented young gun finished with 29 goals and paired well with Grace Close (17), with the duo keeping Tasmania in the contest with their excellent work inside the circle.

After trailing by two goals at the first break, Tasmania cut that margin to one with a strong second-quarter but once again faced a two-goal deficit at the final break following a back and forth third-quarter that was full of momentum swings.

A stronger defensive showing from the Giants in the final quarter, limiting Tasmania to just 10 goals, was enough for the more experienced and highly favoured side to walk away with a four-goal win that was well and truly earned.

Firebirds Futures v Swifts Academy (3rd Play-Off)

In what ended as an absolute Super Netball Reserves finals thriller, it was the Swifts Academy that pipped Queensland Firebirds Futures by just two goals in a memorable win.

The third-place playoff contest to kick-off day two action was full of twists and turns and is no doubt set to be remembered as an all-time classic contest.

The Firebirds broke out to an early 18-14 lead before the Swifts responded strongly in the second-term.

Some early domination at both ends of the court allowed them to shift the momentum back in their favour before ending the term ahead by three goals.

The third-term well and truly took things up a notch, with both sides swinging for the fences but ultimately they ended with 14 goals apiece and the Swifts still ahead by three goals.

Back-to-back goals to open the last term extended the lead to five before both teams traded goals up until the final five minutes of the game.

From here, three straight from the Firebirds cut it back to three before the Swifts own trio of majors once again put the deficit back to six.

But there was still another twist in this classic.

A huge 60 seconds from Firebirds shooter Kirra Tappenden, where she shot four straight goals, gave Queensland hope with the score at 59-58 with two minutes left on the clock.

But some poor defence then opened the door for the Swifts to once again respond, dropping three straight, before Tappenden popped back up with the final two goals of the game.

DAY 1 REPLAYS

The Melbourne Vixens have set an ominous tone on the opening day of the Super Netball Reserves finals weekend.

The Vixens Academy were machine-like in their win over Tasmania Wild, coming within a whisker of notching a 50-goal second half to close out the action.

The injection of Melbourne University Lightning attacking ace Caitlin Hill in the second half proved a masterstroke as she topped the teams goal tally with 33 from 38 attempts.

Claudia Mawson was also strong in the shooting circle with her pace off the ball causing plenty of headaches for the Tassie defenders.

It was a tough finish for the Wild, who had kept their rivals within striking distance, only down 11 goals at the halftime break.

Swifts shooter Lauren Woods has warmed up perfectly ahead of the side’s Super Netball Reserves third-place play-off on Saturday.

Capital Darters v Swifts Academy

Woods, who finished with 202 goals for the season, continued her red-hot form in the shooting circle as the Sydneysiders powered past the Capital Darters on Friday.

Woods took full advantage of the super shot rule to finish with 49 goals as the Swifts knocked off a valiant Darters side 87-72.

The Darters also made use of the Super Shot, with long-range sniper Olivia Clark hitting the court as soon as the air horn sounded in the second and fourth quarters.

A seven-unanswered goal blitz to start the game, really set the tone for the Giants in their win over the Territory Storm.

While the Storm showed plenty of fight in the first half, the Giants exploded in the third term to extend their lead beyond double digits.

Imogen McCulloch led the way on scoring for the Giants with 36 goals while Jamie Podmore-Taylor was inspirational through the midcourt.

A title-hungry West Coast Fever will play off against the Melbourne Mavericks in a talent-ladened Super Netball Reserves grand final on Sunday.

Capital Darters have already proved they have the talent to take it to their Super Netball reserves rivals after winning the play-in tournament earlier this week.

The Fever will be confident of taking out the Super Netball reserves title after finishing the regular season undefeated.

“We’re really happy with how our West Coast Fever Reserves have competed on the national stage with a combination of our WA up-and-coming pathway athletes as well as some opportunities for the Fever athletes to drop back and contribute as well,” coach Guy Keane said.

“Coming off last year’s pilot program where we also finished on top of the ladder, it has been a really successful two years with our program here.”

But any thought of the Fever waltzing to the title should be dispelled quickly.

The Mavericks, competing in their first season in the Super Netball Reserves, have plenty of momentum coming into the final following two big wins in the final round last weekend.

Both teams have the right mix of raw young talent and experienced heads to steer them in the right direction.

Mavericks will look to their leadership duo of Sacha McDonald and Zoe Davies, who have both spent plenty of time in Super Netball systems, to spearhead their title campaign.

On the opposite side of the court two-time WA Netball League best and fairest winner Caitlyn Brown will lead an exciting crop of young talents including teen midcourt sensation Clara Wigley and goal machine Jasmah Haywood.

The Swifts won the final match of the regular season against the Vixens Academy to jump to fourth spot on the ladder.

It has opened the door for the Sydneysiders to clash with the third-placed Queensland Firebirds Futures in Saturday’s Super Netball reserves third-place playoff.
