Country triumphed in the battle with the best from the city as Dubbo College Senior Campus showed great composure to win the NRL Trophy Schoolgirls decider on Thursday over Casula High.

Dubbo took the match 24-18 after leading 14-6 at halftime. Casula closed to 14-12 just after the break, but Dubbo always had something in hand.

Meanwhile, rising NSW rugby league school Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College produced a devastating attacking display to overwhelm Xavier College Ballina 42-22 in the NRL Trophy final at Gosford on Thursday.

The Central Coast school were impressive with the ball, especially in the first half when they ran in five tries to lead 30-12.

The Northern Rivers visitors made them sweat in the second half, closing the gap to eight points at one stage before Tuggerah slipped back into excitement mode for the last seven minutes to score two more tries.

Kicks led to the opening two tries, both scored within the first six minutes. The first came after just two minutes from Oscar Mahoney when Xavier failed to gather a kick that hung for an eternity in the strong wind.

A converted try got Xavier back in the contest but they conceded another within a minute of the restart.

Tuggerah reached into their attacking arsenal for another before the break and were always a threat with the ball in hand.

Xavier scored twice early in the second half to momentarily make things interesting, but they were left with too much to do and faded late on.

Girls rugby league is “going gangbusters” across the country, and even the far reaches of NSW western plains are not exempt.

Deep in the heart of western NSW, the rugby league program at Dubbo College is coming along in leaps and bounds.

Next stop, a state title.

After claiming the title of NSW All Schools Country Champions, the school’s open girls team are set to face Casula High for the NRL Schoolgirls Trophy on Thursday.

Dubbo College Sports Coordinator Craig May said making a state final was a new experience for the girls.

“Girls rugby league is going gangbusters,” May said.

“The numbers that are involved here at the school and also across the region are really good.”

With a couple of players unavailable for the final this week, May said they’ll be relying on their co-captains to lead the squad.

“Zakiah Jenkins and Na’Shayea Dickinson will be our leadership pair,” Dickinson said.

“They’ve been involved in the Western Rams structure over the last few years and they’ve been going very well.”

Both Jenkins and Dickinson were part of the Western Rams squad that took home the Regional Lisa Fiaola Cup this season, and both scored in the grand final victory over Northern Tigers.

May said although he expected Casula to be a really tough opponent, the girls will learn a lot just from the experience.

“At the end of the day we’ll play what’s in front of us,” May said.

“The coaching programs and the coaching strength of the city girls is always going to be very strong, they’ve got some good support networks.

“We’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves, the girls will just play what’s in front of them and win, lose or draw they’ll have smiles on their faces and be happy to have given their all.”
